Pug Myelopathy Research
Pug Myelopathy (Spinal Cord Disease) Project
at Michigan State University, College of Veterinary Medicine At MSU CVM, Dr. Jon Patterson and related clinical faculty have combined their expertise to study spinal cord disease in Pugs, with a focus on Pug Myelopathy including Constrictive myelopathy (CM), and the possibly related condition, spinal arachnoid diverticula (SAD). Neurologists and neurosurgeons from outside MSU are also collaborating with the MSU study. Objectives of the study and how owners can participate are detailed in this PDF |
What needs to be done NOW is to document understanding of how many Pugs are actually affected. This can only be done by surveys, owners answering questionnaires, and obtaining medical records, for literally every Pug who has difficulty walking, is dragging its rear end, and/or has very serious complications of urinary incontinence.
The form is easy to fill out. If your vet can’t help you, just fill out what you know about the Pug. All information remains confidential and is only used to understand the importance of this problem. Copy your veterinarian on our documents; encourage them to refer affected dogs to qualified specialist when symptoms first appear. Ask them to teach owners to provide long term care (including rehab) for dogs who become disabled. Help people be brave and donate tissues from their Pug, ( f it has had a spinal MRI), at the end of its lifetime, for analysis to characterize the disease.
